Chinese cabbage

Chinese cabbage, also known as wombok, is available all year round with GT Produce's main supply coming from Queensland .

It is an East Asian leaf vegetable related to the Western cabbage though slightly sweeter.

Chinese cabbage is the best known and most extensively grown oriental vegetable in Australia and the most frequently eaten vegetable in Asia .

Custard apples

The Australian custard apples season runs from March to July. The growing areas are Queensland and Northern NSW.

There are 2 main varieties, African Prides and Pink Mammoths. The Pink Mammoth is the larger fruit of the 2 and has less seeds.

The fruit is usually round or slightly pine cone-like, 6-10 cm diameter, with a scaly or lumpy skin.

Custard Apples are eaten when soft, and only the white flesh is eaten which resembles and tastes like custard. To eat, simply cut in half and scoop out the white flesh. The Custard Apple should be moist with a pleasant sweet aroma.

Garlic

Australian grown garlic is available from January through to June.

For the remainder of the year imported garlic is sourced from numerous countries to cover the demand.

The main uses of garlic are in the culinary field, although it has other uses in the alternate medicine field because of its medicinal qualities and as a pesticide and fungicide.

Ginger

Australian ginger is available at GT Produce all year round. “New season” ginger is available from Febuary to May. Ginger is predominantly grown in south Queensand (Sunshine coast area).

Originating in South China and India where it has been used in medicines and food for over 5000 years, it is used extensively as a spice in many if not most cuisines of the world.

Limes

Tahitian limes are available at GT Produce all year round. They are grown predominantly in Queensland and Northern NSW . Limes are also grown seasonally in the Riverland with our supplies coming from Mystere Orchards.

Tahitian limes have a fairly thin rind and their flesh is pale green and juicy and have substantial amounts of vitamin C. They enhance the flavours of foods such as rice, potatoes, salads and cooked vegetables while adding no fat and only negligible calories.

We also stock kaffir lime leaves which are often used in Asian cookery, especially Thai.

Longans

The Australian longan season can start as early as November and run through to May. They are predominately grown in the North of Queensland.

The longan is a tropical fruit originating from Southern Asia and grows in bunches from a tree.

They are round with a thin, brown-coloured inedible shell. The sweet flesh of the fruit, which surrounds a black seed, is white, soft, and juicy.

Lychees

The lychee season in Australia is from late November until March. The Australian lychee industry is said to have the longest lychee production season in the world, with a duration of five months.

They are grown in Queensland and Northern NSW , and there are numerous varieties.

The Lychee originates from China and is about the size of a walnut and covered by a red roughly textured rind which is easily peeled. The sweet translucent white flesh, similar to a grape, can be eaten fresh, canned, or dried and is rich in vitamin C.

Mangoes

The Australian mango season runs from September to March.

This season begins in the Northern Territory , moving onto the Burdiken area (Townsville), Mareeba (NQ) and Central & South Queensland, with all areas being about a month apart.

Varieties include Kensington Prides (being the major variety and also known as the ‘Bowen' mango), R2E2, Keitts, Palmers, Calipsos, Honey Gold and Brooks.

During the winter months GT Produce also stock imported mangoes from Mexico and the Phillipines.

Mangos are the most consumed fresh fruit in the world and are an excellent source of vitamins A , B and C .

Persimmons

Persimmons are available in Australia between March and August. They are widely grown in Australia from Southern Queensland to the Southern areas of Australia.The main varieties are Fuju, Jiro and Izu.

The persimmon is the national fruit of Japan .

They have the same shape and size of a tomato and are bright orange when ripe. There are generally two types of fruit, those that are astringent until extremely ripe and those bearing non-astringent fruit. Persimmons can be eaten at various stages of firmness, from very hard to very soft and are high in glucose and protein, and also have various medicinal and chemical uses.

Passionfruit

Passionfruit is available all year round with the main growing areas being Northern NSW and Queensland . The chief varieties are black and panama.

The black variety has a hard smooth skin that begins to wrinkle as the fruit gets older, with yellowish pulp and black edible seeds.

Panama passionfruit has a smooth purple skin and is a larger fruit than the hybrid varieties but a lower pulp to weight ratio.

Passionfruit is an excellent source of dietary fibre and a good source of vitamin C.

Paw paw / Papaya

Paw paw (yellow flesh) and Papaya (red flesh) are grown in Australia almost all year round with numerous varieties available. The predominant growing areas are Queensland and Northern NSW .

There is a distinct difference between the paw paw and papaya, being:

Paw paw: yellow flesh and tends to be a larger fruit

Papaya: Orange to red flesh and usually a smaller oval or pear shaped fruit

The fruit is an excellent source of vitamin A and C, a good source of dietary fibre, potassium and contains some vitamin B1.

Raw papaya is excellent as a meat tenderiser. Due to its digestive enzyme (in the raw fruit), it breaks down the meat and tenderises it.

The seeds may be dried in a dehydrator then ground in a mortar and pestle and used like pepper.

Rambutans

Australian rambutans are available from late November through to April. They are grown in the Northern Territory ( Darwin area) and Northern Queensland (Innisfail area).

Rambutans are a round to oval fruit borne in a loose cluster of 10-20 together. The leathery skin is reddish and covered with fleshy pliable spines, hence the name rambutan, derived from the Malayan word rambut which means hairs. The fruit flesh is translucent, whitish or very pale pink, with a sweet, mildly acidic flavour. The single seed is glossy brown, 2-3 cm long and is poisonous and should not be eaten with the fruit flesh.

Shallots

The Australian shallot season, which includes red and brown, runs from March to July. Outside of this period GT Produce relies on imported shallots, mainly Dutch.
Shallots belong to the onion family, but the shallot flavour is perhaps more delicate than that of onions, perhaps more intense. The red shallot is sweeter and preferred in Asian cooking.

Unlike onions where each plant normally forms a single bulb, shallots form clusters of cloves, rather in the manner of garlic.

Sweet Potatoes

GT Produce have Australian sweet potatoes available all year round.

They are grown predominently in Queensland and Northern NSW .

Varieties include gold, white, red (red skin with white flesh) and asian (white skin and purple veined flesh).

The sweet potato is only distantly related to the potato and has a sweeter flavour.

Besides starch, they are rich in dietary fibre, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin B6.
